Default Do you think breastfeeding a boy should be stopped by age 5?

I am thinking so because I know that the longer a woman does it the more harder it will be for her child to let go when she stops. I mean I know its good for bonding but I am just thinking what will make it easier on him in the long run, you know? I am just curious to know what others think.

I agree...I think one year is long enough though a lot of your books recommend breastfeeding as long as you are comfortable. Personally I find breast feeding a toddler past a year a little obsessive.

After a baby starts on solid food, then breastfeeding should be weened. Around 1 to 1 1/2 years of age but no longer than 2 years old.

You should breastfeed your child, boy or girl, for as long as you are both comfortable. As a child gets older, you can begin to limit the location (only at home) and time (only at night to go to sleep, for example). Weaning should be gentle and at the child's own pace. If you let the child guide you, you will know when it is right to stop nursing.

Apparently after 1 year of breastfeeding, the mom's body stops producing "cream" so to say... the milk drops in vitamin content, and so after a year or so breastfeeding becomes purely comfort to a child who is well able to get all their nourishment through solid food. Which, is the point, to exercize those teeth and digestive system, and to get a variety of vitamins and minerals through various food sources. Also, breastmilk is sweet and can rot a child's developing teeth if it continues throughout the day. A woman i know insisted on nursing her (at the time) 3 year old, and his teeth were concave at the ends, rotting away. She was in serious denial that nursing was causing this problem, and in her case it was apparent it was her inability to let her child grow up and leave her lap that kept her in an un-necessary clingy cycle.
Breastfeeding past the natural time frame of approx. 1 year also can create psychological problems for the child. The child can miss out on developmental opportunities to develop important independence from mom. Nursing children can be more clingy rather than outgoing, and if the child continues to nurse all the way until age 5-- that's school age! Guaranteed no other child in his class still nurses, and that might cause some embarrasment.

Eek. I agree with ironmama. For me personally, I plan to breast feed my baby, but probably no longer than 4 months maybe even stop at 3 as far as directly to the breast goes...I'll try pumping and supplementing after this. Just my preference. I feel those first months are the vital ones to their development and soon after 4 months, most children are introduced to rice formula...if they like it, that is. To me, it's a little weird to have your child be at the age where they can ask for the boob.

Seriously, if they can undo your bra and/or ask in a full and complete sentence to breastfeed, you needed to stop well before that. There is NO reason to nurse past a year. It is ridiculous and seems uneducated to do so to me. Why would you? What is the reasoning?

Obviously alot of people forgot to see what the AAP(American Pediatric Association) says about breastfeeding: you can ask your pediatrician for a newborn breastfeeding pamphlet or google the AAP and search their website for breastfeeding. You can find this information there.

According to the AAP, in order to get the full benefits that breastfeeding offers, you have to nurse at least the first 2 years of your child's life. http://www.aap.org/healthtopics/breastfeeding.cfm

The benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any disadvantages (the only ones I am aware of is drug & alcohol can be transferred through breast milk- if you're using them)
It is the preferred method for feeding your baby by doctors & prediatricians.

I am so sick of people being judgemental about a woman's personal choice of how long to breastfeed.
I wouldn't listen to what people "advise"- just go with what you think is right & what you're pediatrician would recommend for your babies & toddler's nutritional needs.
Breastfeeding is natural and the functional reason for why women's breast produce milk after birth.

a 5 year old? i find that to be child abuse. that is a child old enough for school. i cant see breast feeding much past 2. emotionally i think that is terrible for a child, boy or girl, to still be breast feeding at 5 and it can be crippling to them socially. there are many many other ways to bond around that age. my daughter is about to turn 5 and we are very close. we read, cook, play and get ready for her first year of school. i can't even imagine breast feeding her. i know everyone i know feels the same way.

personal feelings aside, i would just ask your son's doctor. get their opinion. i know that my daughter's doctor wanted her drinking whole milk for brain development and strong bones. definately check with the doctor to see benefits and negatives.
