Default Making your own babyfood

Anyone got any recipes for making baby food. I hate the thought of buying jars of baby food with tons of additives and preservatives in it, but I am also not the great of a cook.

I have NO CLUE about baby food but im going to go out on a limb here and say i dont think there is much 'cooking' involved... i figure it would be pretty my pureeing veggies and wha-la!.. of course im probably totally WRONG.

Making Your Own Baby Food - How to

In order to make your own baby foods, you'll need something to cook in. A steamer basket is cheap and by cooking fruits and vegetables in it, you'll be sure of keeping the nutrients in the food, instead of in the cooking water.

To puree your foods, you can use a fork, a food mill or blender. A blender quickly purees almost anything into the finest consistency. When your baby first starts on solids, you'll be pureeing things to a very fine consistency and, as baby gets a little older, you will make foods a little coarser.

I tried making some baby food. My best attempt was boiling sweet potato and putting it in an icecube tray, in the freezer. Pop one out at a time to defrost for baby.
Then, I realized that despite all my hard work, the kid did not like sweet potato. Actually, she did not like any baby food. Still eats like a bird.
I was also concerned about the preservatives, etc. in baby food. You can find better brands. When I was still trying to feed her baby food, I tried Gerber Organics or Earths Best. In the health food store, they sold frozen baby food whose ingredients listed nothing but sweet peas, or sweet potato, or whatever. It was pricey, but worth keeping on hand when you don't have the time or energy to prepare it yourself. There are alternatives to the regular Gerber stuff.
G'Luck.

I am planning on making my own baby food. My first two ate the jar food but I would like to try making it myself this time. I know with the fruits like banana and such you just need to puree it and then put them into trays to freeze and then just warm it up a bit when you're ready to use it. The vegetables would need to be boiled or steemed and then pureed. They had a special food processor to make baby food with at Babies R' Us. It was about $25 so I think I might try one of those.

She's right. I made all my daughters baby food. It's very simple.
All it takes is a little effort. The rewards are great though. My daughter loves the tastes of natural foods..fruits and vegetables. She still turns her nose up at boxed, canned or prepared foods, and she loves a wide variety of foods.

It usually takes one day dedicated to baby food making a month.
The easier to make are fruits, carrots, and sweet potatoes. I had a hard time with peas and greenbeans, I ended up buying gerber for those.

Some of our favorites were
apple/pear and blueberry
1/2 bag of apples of your choice (I liked gala or mcintosh)
2 pears
and a cup of blueberries (fresh or frozen let thaw)

peel, and wash apples and pears (no seeds duh boil in water until soft. Drain. Blend with blueberries. In blender mix half of the mixture, slowly adding filtered water until it becomes thin enough to puree. puree until smooth. Baby food consistency. Be careful not to fill mixer too full, thats why I do half at a time.

Mix other half of mixture.

pour into icecube trays, freeze solid, then transfer the cubes into freezer bags. Mark and date (this is important). I popped one in the microwave for a few seconds being careful not to boil or overcook before feeding. I also bought seperate trays for freezing food.

apple/banana
1/2bag of apples
and 4 bananas

follow as above, but don't boil bananas

Sweet potato/carrot or you make potatoes and carrots seperate too.
2 sweet potatoes no skin.
half bag of whole carrots peeled and cut.
follow same as above only boil veggies in water. Potatoes are more starchy so you will have to add alot more filtered water in blender. This goes a long way.

Never add sugar or salt. And you can pretty much turn anything into baby food. When they get older, you can add little salts like with chicken & rice mushed up, or chopped corn and potatoes. You can invent alot.

Because these foods don't have preservatives, you may notice discoloration after thawing, especially with bananas. It doesn't mean it's gone bad. You'll save alot of $ on baby foods, and it tastes better too.
Hope that helps get you started anyway.

Also you can use the water you boiled the food in since it will have some of the nutrients in it. I preferred steaming. But that was just my preference those recipes are awesome!

Basically its not difficult at all just look at what they are selling in the jars and try to make the same. Most of it is puree so you just boil the vegetables and mash and mix with broth or something. Just avoid heavy tough veges since the digestive system won't be able to handle it at such an early age.
