Default Almost 3 weeks old...

So my wee guy is tongue tied and i was having issues breastfeeding, so i decided to pump, its time consuming, but at least this way i know how much he is getting...

My doc has me on donparadone (however you spell it) to increase my milk flow, but still every 3 hours when i pump im only pumping 2 ounces or a tad bit more out of each, does this seem normal to anyone??

This seems fine to me. My doctor told me that we produce more milk as the baby demands more, so the baby should be fine right now and only requires that much at a time. You will start producing more in the upcoming weeks.

well that is probably normal, a three week old probably isnt taking more than 2 or 3 ounces per feeding anyways. Make sure to drink lots of fluids to keep milk flow up! I know it sounds weird but drinking a beer (1) can actually help increase milk production too.

well you could always breast feed during the day and do formula at night or vice versa, then the baby is still getting breast milk. I have heard a lot of people doing both, I had a breast lift and augmentation so I am hoping to be able to breast feed this time around but if I dont make enough milk Im going to try and do both.

I also have a 3 week old baby and I pump my milk for her in a bottle because it was just too sore for her to nurse. I usually pump 2 to 3 oz at each pumping. I was told as she eats more you pump more and your milk supply will increase.

I hope this helps!

If the baby sucks on your breast ( I know it's painful) it increases the amount of milk you secrete. Babies manage to suck out more than you can pump. Try and pump a bit to alleviate the pressure and then have the baby nurse. I pumped and fed during the first month and after a while the soreness went away and my body adjusted to the requirements of the baby. The contact between you and your baby is invaluable during feeding sessions.

That is about how much a newborn eats. If it doesn't go up when you need it to, I would suggest getting a different pump. Also, something that seemed to help when I pumped is when I'd turn it off for about 15 seconds, then back on fairly fast and it would go crazy.... more like the normal sucking motion of a baby. Suck suck suck... swallow and relax for a little, then suck suck suck. They have pumps that do a great job mimicking babies, they are worth the money and can be way more comfortable.
