props to a new mom in wal mart
i saw the most beautiful thing in wal mart today...
a woman was discreetly breastfeeding her 2 week old baby in the middle of wal mart at the benches. it was very inspiring to me, i always feel very uncomfortable feeding Aries outside of my home even when at a relatives house. i think its such a natural and beautiful thing that is often looked at as something to be done only in private but i don't think it should be like that. i just thought she was setting a good example for new moms like myself who would like to be more comfortable with bfing in public

Re: props to a new mom in wal mart
I did it once - at lunch at a sandwich place. Baby was tucked away in a sling, I guess you couldn't even tell that I was nursing. But I felt awkward and watched. Not sure if I will do it again. I feel perfectly comfortable in the car, but in public...maybe I just have to get used to it.
Did any of you try nursing in public? How are your experiences?

Re: props to a new mom in wal mart
Became a pro at nursing in public with my daughter - to the point she was in a wrap or mei tai, I was walking around shopping and nursing at the same time.
The only person that ever knew (well that I ever knew knew) what I was doing was a old woman that came up and kept saying she was sleeping, I told her she wasn't and was eating and she pulled the wrap back and got a eye full of boob and then got offended
If my kids were hungry, they would get nursed. Now, my DS sucks nursing in public, he's more interested in what is going on around him to nurse so he'll usually go without until we get home. He's been like that since around 4 months old. My DD on the other hand, when ever where ever....if I didn't unlatch the girl, she would a have been a permenate boob attachment LOL.

Re: props to a new mom in wal mart
i've fed him in the car and at friends at family's house but not in real public, i really want to be comfortable bfing in public. I think bfing discreetly in public helps to make other women feel more comfortable with themselves and sets a good image. those are just my thoughts tho

Re: props to a new mom in wal mart
Boonie eats when Boonie's hungry and nobody puts Boonie in a corner I mean yucky old public bathroom, to eat. Yeah, I've done it in public a lot. Did it at a skiing resort on a bench and this middle age guy came as sat right next to me, dont' think he had any idea what I was doing til he sat down - anyway, he stayed...I figure if I'm comfortable w/it and dont' give of a nervous vibe, then other people will probably be more comfortable with it. I cover up so all that is visible really is maybe a quarter inch of skin, if you're really looking, so I really can't see what people's freak out would be about. I've never had any negative comments, just some old ladies smile, some people get a little flustered if I catch them looking, but I dont blame them, its a bit out of the norm to see on a daily basis, so I'm sure I'd do a double take too. Guess I feel like I do get "looks" but I've decided that just b/c I get a "look" doesn't mean its disapproving, just that folks are trying to figure out what it is they're seeing, then they are typically fine with it, as I'm not throwing my boobs all over the place or anything. So go on with your mommying selves, mamas, don't be nervous, I think its wonderful for our babies to know they still have mom's body with a warm meal and beating heart there for them in the swirl of humanity that is walmart and the shopping mall and all the craziness of modern life

I can only imagine how it must feel to breastfeed in public. I was feeding Ethan a BOTTLE in a store and people were staring, I can only imagine what they do when you're breastfeeding. I love seeing women doing that in public, its a right that not enough women take advantage of.

Yeah seriously! My husband and I live a couple blocks away from the mall here so if we need to go we often pack up baby and walk. Back in November we did this & knew we'd be a while so we packed a bottle. Our mall is outdoor & DD was hungry, so we fed her on the bench right there in the middle of it all...and I felt like we got weird looks as people walked by! People are just weird.
Anyway, I've seen a few women breastfeeding like that and it's something I think people need to get used to so there isn't such an "OMG" reaction. It's a natural thing & a lot of kids seem to grow up thinking it's weird (anybody watch 16 & pregnant/teen mom? Reminds me of one of the responses by one of those kids about it).
That being said, I did see a pic of a woman breastfeeding in a walmart who basically had her entire t-shirt off...that might not be the best way to go about it however.

Re: props to a new mom in wal mart
YES!!! So much better than the last bf'ing story I heard, which involved a mom getting kicked out of Target for nursing...
I'm a bit militant with breastfeeding. I don't feel women should have to hide or go to a bathroom or even be terribly discreet if they don't feel like it. The day that bottlefeeding mom's are looked at nasty if they don't throw a blanket over their babies while they're eating is the day I'll think about putting a blanket over mine! Or the day they take those 20 foot tall posters of almost naked porn stars out of Victoria Secret's windows... They're just BOOBS, actually being used for what they're for for once!! RAWR!!!
Ok... sorry- I'm a little fiesty today. Really, once I got the hang of it, I'm pretty discreet. I don't use a wrap or a blanket, but the baby's head blocks anything anyway. Not much to see. I love seeing other mom's out there nursing and I wish more mom's were comfortable doing so...
