Default Today is September 23, my baby will be 5 months on the 30th. Is it too early to...

...feed him baby food? My mother in law is pushing it. My doctor told me to wait until he is 6 months. He is almost 5 months and today she wants to give him jarred baby food. (carrots, green beans... vegetables) Is it too soon?

It is definitely not too soon to give your son jarred baby food, I have 3 kids and I started them all long before 5 months. Every baby is different, however, they all are hungry! breast milk/formula does not stay with them long at all. A good way to time it is once your baby reaches 13lbs, they can usually withstand a food source with more substance. Also, my last baby got 2 teeth within 2 days of one another at 4 mos, so I introduced STAGE 1 veggies first, introducing 1 new veggie per week, then moved on to the fruits, again 1 at a time to see how each was tolerated.(I suggest veggies first, because once they taste the natural sweetness of the fruits, good luck trying to follow that up with a bland veggie!) Of course the doctors go by the guideline where they have us start this whole process at a later age because their not at home with us, so they have to protect themselves in case something goes wrong. If your son still has that one gagging reflex and tongue thrust reflex where he gags or pushes out with his tongue, anything other than a nipple, he is not ready. Bottom line, your son will let you know when he wants to eat, trust me. Hope this helps, good luck.

Its up to you. My doctor said to wait till 6 months but everyone is different. Don't let your mother in law push you into it if you or the baby are not ready. If you decide to give him some just do one per week to see if he is allergic to any of them.

P.S.-My baby will be 5 months on the 30th too. HAPPY B-DAY BABY!!!

Who do you think is more trained on babies, doctors? or your mother in law? i would stick with what the doctor said. Now it won't huty to give him a bite of mash potatoes every so often.

Don't let your mother in law push you into anything you don't want to do. It is your baby, not hers. I started mine on baby food when he was about 3-4 months old. Cereal at 6 weeks. All babies are different. Does your son act like he's still hungry after a bottle? Does he want another one before 4 hours? If so, try a little food. If he's still satisfied with the formula than I'd wait. But if you do try giving him foods now, try one at a time because you want to make sure that he doesn't get an upset stomach, or allergies. You'll be able to pinpoint any foods that he might have a reaction to.
