Default Anyone using a birthing center or midwife?

Hello All! This is my very first pregnancy post ever!! Yea!! I'm 9w6d and we still haven't told anyone...so it's kind of exciting to be able to tell someone without really telling anyone.

This is my first and I'm planning to use a midwife and birthing center and am very excited about the prospect. My first appointment is in a little over a week and I can't wait to hear the heartbeat...hopefully we will be able to hear it. I just wondered if anyone else out there has used a midwife or gone to a birthing center and how their experince was.

welcome to the forum and congratulations! I had my first in the hospital and it was horrible. Had my second at home with a midwife in August and it was the most wonderful experience in my life, I would never choose to give birth in a hospital again. There is another mama on here that gave birth in a birthing center and she loved it but didn't so much enjoy the transporting there (she was in transition in the car) so she talks about having a homebirth if she did it again. But the main thing is that at least its not the hospital and being in a birth center can give you that extra sense of security if you need that, especially since its your first.

anyway, welcome, it will be great to hear your experience with the midwife, so keep in touch!

Hi! I haven't had a birthing center birth, but I've had two of my three at home with midwives. My first was your standard hospital birth. The difference in care between OB's and midwives is amazing. It's been two and a half years since the birth of my son, and I can still call his midwife anytime I have a question about anything. I can get her directly on the phone without having to leave a message with a nurse and wait for hours, and she knows exactly who I am. Find me one OB in the world that can do that! Your visits are longer, and your waiting room time is shorter, and she takes the time to develop a relationship with you. You also have a lot more say in your own care.

Baby crying- got to go, but I wouldn't go back to an OB for anything. Midwives are awesome, and please PM me if you have any questions!!

I would love to have a home birth and hope that I can convince my BF after this one that it will be safe to do a home birth with the next one. I'm really excited to go to my first appointment which is next Monday. Apparently they generally do their first appointments around 12 weeks.

I had a VERY early miscarriage in '08 (probably technically a chemical pregnancy) but it was still devastating so I've been kind of anxious with this one and know I will feel so much better once I've had my first visit. I'm sure I will have lots of questions as I progress!

Thanks for the welcome!!

We're using a midwife as well, and we have had a much better experience (we had a prior miscarriage, switched to a different office with primarily midwife care). I don't know about all midwives, but ours is far more informative and attentive than the ob ever was. We'll never regret sticking with a midwife, especially since she's been delivering babies for 21 years.

We aren't using a midwife, but we are using a birthing center. Basically, I told my hubby that I can't wait to go into labor because this place looks like a resort! HAHA! I've been with my friends that went to hospitals, but this is much more comfortable, the staff is amazing, the rooms are undeniably a million times better than a regular hospital. The rooms at the birthing center i'm going to have a queen bed for the mother, a bassinet of course for the little bean (um that's what I refer to babies as...), and another bed for someone (such as mother, hubby ((if you don't want him in the same bed)), etc) to stay in as well! I'm so relieved that I wont have to share a room with someone else. And the rooms have a huuuuuuuge shower or a huuuuuuuuuge bath tub with jets, your choice. It's like, having a baby in style! HAHA! I've heard numerous great things about Midwives as well. Never heard anything bad about them! Whichever choice you make, make the one that makes YOU most comfortable. After all, you'll be the one doing all the work! Good luck!!! Wishing you an amazing and healthy pregnancy!

I searched high and low for a midwife in our area, but they are few and far between.

I did however find an amazing doctor who is not a tradionalist and who believes in empowering women to try to find the power within to birth with as few interventions as possible.

I also have a Doula who is a very close friend. Both of them have been wonderful so far with answering questions and being support people. I am stil undecided on whether I will do a home birth or not. We live 30 minutes from the closest hospital and are out in in the country, so if a complication should arise I'm not sure we'd make it in time.

I hope you find the right fit!

Congratulations! It's very exciting, isn't it?!

I'm using a midwifery/birthing center within a hospital- which isn't too common. My plan is for a water birth with no interventions. However, I'm not getting my hopes up. The reason why I'm going for the birthing center in a hospital is because I didn't want to be in labor for 17 hours without an epidural. I'm not that committed to a natural birth! But, I want as few interventions as possible.

The bottom line for me is that I want to be with women that have my best interests at heart. I want to go naturally, so I trust that these ladies will only suggest an intervention if the baby will be better for it. I didn't trust the hospital to do that for us.

Have you seen "the business of being born"? Great movie and I recommend it to anyone considering a natural birth.

Sounds like my plan. One of my friends did a home birth. I considered it, but, like you, we also live far out of the city. She had a 2-3 hour labor and was so happy with her choice. I just don't feel comfortable depending on the labor going that well. I mentioned in another thread that I tend to prepare for the worst. The one thing I've learned from researching L&D is that no two are the same and that it's best to roll with it because anything can happen.
