Re: Does anyone know any alternatives to taking prenatal vitamen pills?!?
I'm from Aus too, and have been doing some reading
It important to take folic acid for the first 6-12 weeks, and down the track you may need iron suppliments, though your bowel changes so that it absorbs iron more easily so if your stores were ok to start with then as long as you try to eat some red meat a few times per week, many pregnant women dont need iron either.
Calcium is another important suppliment, but if you can stomach 4-6 serves of dairy/soy a day..yoghurt,cheese,milk. Then you can get away without suppliments as well. If you can't stomach the dairy foods then maybe talk to your pharmacist about calcium suppliements...they are not as big or nasty tasting as the full mutivitamins. You can even get disolvable ones.
I am 12 weeks too and like you for some reason the last week or so suddenly can't stomach the vitamin pills I was taking any longer. The thought of swallowing one of them makes me gag...which is weird as my morning (all day)sickness is actually easing. I spoke to my Obs and did some online reading, and was advised not to worry too much, just to try and eat a wide variety of foods and to keep my appointments (as if I wouldn't) and they will monitor my iron levels as things progress.
If you are really worried about your diet, and feel you need some suppliments, talk to your pharmacist. You may be able to tolerate some children's vitamins (though these often do no have iron) or they may be able to suggest a disolvable form. Don't just choose off the shelf as preparations with high levels of Vitamin A in particular can cause birth defects. So check with a pharmacist or your Obs.
