Prenatal pills contain folic acid which is significant to woman while trying to concieve and while pregnant. Folic acid plays a huge part in your baby's developement especially in the early stages, which is why they recommend you take them while TTC. The typical dose is 1 pill each day...
Re: i want to start taking prenatal vitamins? but i dont know for how long and
It is VERY important to take prenatal vitamins BEFORE you get pregnant.
Spina bifida (birth defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord or its coverings) is a very serious condition can develop in your baby due to lack of folic acid before you even realize you are pregnant. The condition happens in week 3 - 4 of your pregnancy (i.e. one week after you missed your period)
The chance of spina bifida can be decreased by up to 75% when daily folic acid supplements are taken prior to conception.
If you check the bottles of most prenatal vitamins they recommend starting 3 months prior to conception.

^^^^If you read the back of a prenatal bottle.... its uses are for pregnant women, women who are trying to become pregnant, and nursing mothers. Its very good practice to be taking them while TTC! If you read what a prenatal vitamin contains... its pretty easy to see why its a good idea to take them. Folic acid is a nessacity while your pregnant, and helps aid the conception process.
To the O/p general dose is one a day... any brand is fine! Just make sure its got a lot of folic acid! Best of luck in you TTC efforts!
Re: i want to start taking prenatal vitamins? but i dont know for how long and
All the docs now seem to recommend prenatal vitamins even before you are trying to get pregnant. I use Rainbow One vitamins because they contain some ginger and I can tolerate them better than any vitamin I've ever taken--even the Flintstones ones. I also take Expecta DHA supplement because I'm allergic to fish (other supplements seem to be fish-based, and fish can be good for pregnant women but I can't have it).
Re: i want to start taking prenatal vitamins? but i dont know for how long and
I asked my doctor when I should STOP taking them and he said that they are perfectly fine to take before, during, and after your pregnancy and that he insists upon it
I know plently of women who are not trying to conceive who take prentals because it makes their nails and hair healthier.
