Drinking formula while pregnant?
I know that sounds weird, but I have been doing a lot of reading since I learned I was pregnant, and hear me out.
I know that what you eat goes to your babies and in many cases they are less picky to eat their vegetables, for instance, if you eat the same kind of vegetables while pregnant. They're already used to the taste of them through the amniotic fluid.
Well, I'm having twins. I have been toying with the idea of supplementing with formula now and then to make feedings easier, but I heard that not all babies take to formula very well.
Here's my question. If I drank some baby formula while pregnant with them, do you think it would help them adjust to it better when they are born? I doubt it would hurt them at all. Has anyone here tried this?
Thanks in advance

Re: Drinking formula while pregnant?
Just an opinion...
But I don't think it will. I don't think it is the lack of exposure to the food that causes problems with formula. After all, you aren't drinking your breastmilk right now, and they will do fine with that right?
I am pretty sure it it just the harshness to their digestive system. And since all nurtients are only coming as blood through the umbilical cord, the digestive system still won't be used if you drink formula right now. It won't be used untill they come out. I mean, they swallow some amniotic fluid, but I don't think it's the same.
I would just start adding it to you breastmilk as soon as it comes in. I think every baby is different and you can't control how they will react. But with twins, you should def start soon with the supplementing so they can get used to it because you won't be able to keep up with just BM so might as well get used to it.
I quit BF pretty fast and made the switch to formula in about 4 days of mixing different quantities. He did fine, no problems whatsoever.
However my friend has been mixing for 4 months and every time she adds a little more fomula, her daughter cries for hours on end for about a week untill she is used to it.

hmm I could swore I posted on here already..maybe I forgot to hit the submit botton (wouldnt be the first time ) I dont see how that would help them get on formula any better. Not sure what healthy benifits it would have either. Its an interesting thought tho

Re: Drinking formula while pregnant?
Not a good idea. Formula is made to be full of nutrients for a baby meaning you might overdo it on the vitamins! Plus if you happen to find a baby that doesn't like formula (very unlikely, never heard of it - mostly the problem is acid reflux which is also a breastmilk problem) you try different brands and formulation (powder, liquid, etc) until you find one that suits your baby. If you really are thinking about it I would suggest running it by your midwife / doctor before taking it.

Re: Drinking formula while pregnant?
I don't think the nutrients would be a problem for the babies. I've been told to drink Ensure every day and that has a ton more nutrients than formula. Actually, drinking Ensure every day is the only way I can keep up with my nutrient needs!
Thanks for the advice though I've decided not to, simply because ... it doesn't seem like it'll have the effect I'm hoping for. I am glad to hear that not many babies dislike formula. That puts my mind at ease a bit!

I don't think it's a very good idea nutritionally.... plus, have you ever tasted the stuff? I do an activity with my parents in my childbirth classes where I have them drink some formula. Turns out it's very effective for encouraging breastfeeding! That stuff tastes sooo gross!

I know multiple moms that have breastfed twins without supplementing (and one that did triplets). It is possible and it's mis-information telling moms that they won't be able to keep up with twins.
I agree with flamingpeachfish - have you tasted or even smelled the stuff, BLAH, not something I would willing drink!!! You'll get plenty of nutriance to your babies through your diet.

Re: Drinking formula while pregnant?
Thanks for the congrats
I'm not worried about being able to supply my twins with enough breast milk, I'm just worried I will be too tired. I know that breast milk comes as it is demanded, so not having enough won't be a problem. Seeing as breast milk is the best thing you can give your babies, I won't be in a hurry to stop breast feeding either, that's for sure - unless something happens like, it's too painful to feed.
