I take Materna too. It's got 1 mg of folic acid which is I think 1000 mcg. Plus if you eat healthy you should get lots of extra folic acid - green veggies have a lot, and someone said OJ too... so you should be fine!

I take Materna as well. My doctor told me it's one of the best.

I read this somewhere:

1st Trimester: all about vitamins. take the vitamin and if you can, eat fruit and veg.

2nd Trimester: All about protein and calcium because the bones and muscles are really growing a lot.

3rd Trimester: All about Omega-3 fatty acid because the brain and eyes are developing a lot. Fish and flax oil are the best sources I think.

Also - I heard that 600 mcg of folic acid is sufficient unless you're overweight and if that's the case you should go for a full 1mg.

But make sure that the fish oil are not those made from the liver of the fish and are made from the body of the fish. Supplements made from the liver of the fish, such as cod liver oil, contain the retinol form of vitamin A and need to be either avoided altogether or strictly limited in pregnancy so that your daily intake does not exceed 3,300 micrograms (mcg). On the other hand, fish oils not derived from fish livers contain lots of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which is essential for your baby's developing eyes and brain.

Alot of foods are fortified with folic acid these days. You can find good amounts in your breads. A prenatal vitamin usually will have 1000-1600 mcg of folic acid which is more than plenty. If you want just a normal women's multivitamin, it will have around 400 in it which is usually enough to get that extra kick.
